有名でもない大学生が箱根までの道を走るだけのレースになぜ？ と思うが箱根駅伝は、日本社会の構造そのものだ。厳然と残る企業や官庁、公務員の学閥。また、一流大学の牙城に二流大、新興勢力が切り込もうとする図も、現実の企業社会の光景でもある（で、無力感に苛まれたり）。体育会系出身者たちが学生時代の先輩後輩を巡って仕事を取ってくることで成り立つ営業。箱根の山を競うレースに、日本の企業社会の縮図が編み込まれている。そうした日本社会の文脈が刻み込まれているイベントなので、ある程度それを共有する階層にしか楽しめないだろう。海外には輸出不可能なハイコンテクストコンテンツだ。
パチンコやケータイゲームのスポンサーしか入らない格闘技の中継なんかと違って、箱根駅伝のスポンサーは超豪華だ。ある程度、高い階層の視聴者層を見込めるので、引く手あまただろう。駅伝が日本の企業社会の縮図なら、箱根駅伝のCMは日本経済の縮図である。
